Summary: A work of fiction based on a true historical event. Gentlewoman and mistress at Gawthorpe Hall, Fleetwood Shuttleworth, who was born in 1595, was pregnant again. Despite three full term pregnancies, Fleetwood lost all three babies and her doctor had predicted that she would not survive another birth. Anxious for an heir for her husband, Fleetwood is determined to have the baby, and enlists the help of midwife Alice Grey who promises to help her deliver a healthy baby.
