The Book of Wonders gives an account of Marco Polo's long journey on the roads of the East and in China. By bringing new elements to the knowledge of a dreaded world, he responded to the humanistic curiosity of the kings of Europe and their courts. We discover encyclopedic observations on Tartar customs, but also legends in which the supernatural takes pride of place. The centuries do nothing: Marco Polo's book educates, astonishes, always amazes.

1254 - 1324. Accompagnant son père et son oncle, négociants à Venise, il prit dès 1271 la route de Pékin à travers l'Asie centrale et arriva en 1275 à Shangdu, résidence de l'empereur Kubilay Khan. Celui-ci lui ayant confié diverses missions, il parcourut le pays pendant seize ans. Rentré à Venise (1295), il fit le récit de son voyage dans le Livre des merveilles du monde, ou Il Milione, extraordinaire description de la Chine mongole.
